What is a Hair Closure? A closure is a hair piece that is usually made of lace or silk, although lace is the far more common choice. The hair piece is attached to a cornrow base and secured around the perimeter in order to help protect your hair and improve its look.  Health Benefits of Hair Closures Closures bring countless advantages, both for the health and appearance of your hair. Many women, in an effort to help their “leave out” better blend with their weave, chemically relax it or use lots of heat on the hair. However, this can result in hair that is much more brittle, thinner, and shorter than the rest of your hair. By wearing a closure, you make sure that all of your hair is protected so that this doesn’t happen.   How Hair Closures can Improve your Hair’s Appearance In addition to providing your hair with many health benefits, closures can also fix the problem of blending the color and texture of your hair with your weave. Closures solve the problem by not making you have to apply heat or dye parts of your hair to match your weave. Instead of having to worry about that, you can experiment with dying your weave any of countless colors because you would only be dying your weave and closure, not any of your actual hair, making the process much safer. So, using a closure is a great investment for your hair because it allows you to experiment with different styles and colors with much less damage being done to your hair.  Lace vs. Silk Closures  When picking a hair closure, you can choose between lace and silk as your material. There are advocates for both types, although lace is the far more popular and common choice. Lace closures are much thinner than silk closures, so they lie flatter on your head, making the “line of demarcation” (where your scalp ends and the closure begin) much less obvious. However, most lace bases need to be bleached so that they match the color of your scalp. Because not many companies will do this step for you, some people prefer silk closures over lace ones since silk closures don’t have to be bleached. Additionally, silk closures look much more natural and similar to your hair, but because they aren’t as thin, they won’t lie flat on your head and can look bad unless they are properly sealed in the front. The major downside of silk closures is that they are much more expensive than lace closures.  Sealing Down Your Closure There are many different methods you can use to seal down your closure, although some of them hurt your hair more than others. The most common methods that people use are glue, tape, hair bands, or sewing. Gluing is one of the most destructive methods as if you’re not careful, it can rip off your edges or even cause a bald spot. There are ways to make gluing safer, such as applying a protective solution to the area on your head where you will glue the closure, but in general it is better to avoid glue as it can cause many problems. Taping as a method of sealing is much safer than glue is, although it is much less sturdy. If you want to be sure that your closure will stay in, taping is usually not the best method. You can use a hair band by cutting a head band to match the circumference of your head, sewing it to opposite sides of the closure, laying the closure flat and tying the head band to the back of your head. However, if you accidentally tie the headband too tight, it can give you headaches, so if you use this method you should be very careful. If none of these methods sound good, sewing the closure down is another good choice without many downsides.  Wearing a Closure If you want to install your own closure, don’t worry, it’s not as hard to install as it seems, but in order to do it yourself, you need to know how to sew on weave. If you’ve never done this before or didn’t have great results last time, YouTube tutorials are a great (free) resource to use to teach yourself how to install closures perfectly. If you have any doubts or still aren’t sure, it’s a good idea to consult with a licensed beautician or even have them install it for you.
